The PRN Pediatric Acute Care Physical Therapist provides high quality, developmentally appropriate physical therapy services to infants, children, and adolescents in an acute hospital setting. This role supports patient care needs on an as needed basis, including coverage during high census, weekend/holiday rotations, and staff absences. The clinician performs comprehensive assessments, delivers evidence based interventions, and collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to optimize mobility, safety, and functional outcomes for medically complex pediatric patients.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Treatment
• Perform age appropriate physical therapy evaluations for pediatric patients ranging from neonates to young adults with diverse medical, surgical, trauma, and developmental conditions.
• Develop individualized, evidence based treatment plans that reflect patient goals, clinical findings, and interdisciplinary recommendations.
• Provide therapeutic interventions including mobility training, neuromuscular re education, positioning, developmental facilitation, strengthening, endurance training, and caregiver education.
• Monitor patient response, modify treatment plans as needed, and ensure safe progression of mobility.
• Recommend appropriate equipment (e.g., mobility aids, orthotics, positioning devices) and coordinate procurement as needed.
Documentation & Compliance
• Complete all documentation within required timelines and in accordance with hospital, regulatory, and professional standards.
• Maintain accurate, detailed records including evaluation findings, treatment interventions, patient progress, and discharge recommendations.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
• Participate in daily rounds and communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, case management, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, and child life teams.
• Contribute to safe discharge planning, including recommending continued therapy services (inpatient rehab, outpatient, early intervention, or home services).
Family & Caregiver Education
• Provide clear, compassionate education to caregivers regarding mobility strategies, developmental needs, home programs, precautions, and discharge recommendations.
• Support families in understanding their child’s condition and the role of PT in recovery and development.
Professional Responsibilities
• Maintain current licensure, BLS certification, and required competencies for providing care in a high acuity pediatric environment.
• Participate in orientation, training, and continuing education as needed.
• Adhere to hospital infection control, safety, and quality assurance protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
• Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program.
Licensure & Certification
• Active state Physical Therapist license (in good standing).
• Current BLS Certification (required).
Experience
• Prior experience in pediatric acute care highly preferred.
• New graduates with pediatric clinical rotations and strong interest in acute care may be considered depending on hospital needs.
Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. Hourly Range: $37.82 to $56.73
