What is cerebral palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a diagnosis that describes a group of chronic (long-lasting) conditions affecting body movement, posture and muscle coordination. This can affect a child’s ability to perform daily tasks and participate in activities. Severity ranges from mild to very severe.

CP is not progressive, meaning it does not get worse over time. However, secondary conditions such as hip dysplasia, scoliosis, seizure disorders, joint stiffness caused by tight muscles and uneven muscle strength can get worse without the right treatment.

Can cerebral palsy be cured?

While there’s no cure for CP, our experts in the Cerebral Palsy Program care for approximately 2,000 kids, teens and young adults a year, and can help improve your child’s symptoms through innovative treatment, training and therapy.

What causes cerebral palsy?

Injury to one or more areas of the brain causes CP. This can happen while a baby is still in the womb, during or right after birth or during infancy. Damage to the motor areas of the brain disrupts the brain's ability to properly control movement and posture. Certain genetic conditions can also cause CP.

How common is cerebral palsy?

As the most common developmental disability in the United States, cerebral palsy affects about four out of every 1,000 live births.
