The Cardiac Progressive Care Unit provides acute cardiac care for congenital and acquired heart disease. We work as an integrated team to improve survival rates and quality of life for our patients and their families through our expertise and compassion.

About the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU)

The Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (CPCU) provides dedicated beds and nursing staff for patients who are well enough to be discharged from the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) but are not yet well enough to return home. Because heart problems can be very complex and difficult to manage, the nurses and staff in this area have a wealth of experience and know what is required for the best heart care possible. As part of the process in the CPCU, we help prepare families for discharge from the hospital with education on transitioning the patient off of oxygen and cardiovascular drugs.

Who we treat at the CPCU

The Cardiac Progressive Care Unit provides care for children and adults with cardiac conditions such as congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension and acquired heart disease. Our patients range from newborns to adults with congenital heart disease. The CPCU cares for patients with medical or surgical congenital heart conditions that need progressive care or intermediate therapy and help them get well enough to transition to care at home.

What makes our cardiac progressive care different

We require our clinical staff to have the highest level of nursing skills, specialized cardiac knowledge and the critical thinking skills that the complex environment of the CPCU demands. We also prioritize continuity of care to provide the best results and maximum comfort for patients. Our coordinated team approach ensures that we communicate all the needs of our patients and families in order to provide the highest quality care.

The CPCU at Children’s Hospital Colorado is part of the Pediatric Acute Care Cardiology Collaborative (PAC3), an organization dedicated to improving cardiac acute care outcomes through fostering sustainable quality improvement initiatives and optimizing organizational partnerships. Through this partnership, our CPCU helps lead the field in family-centered inpatient medical, post-surgical and post-interventional cardiac care. Our experts also recognize the effects that serious heart conditions can have on a child's brain development, so we created the Cardiac Neurodevelopment Program to help these kids and their families.

While Katria was still pregnant, she learned her daughter had a heart condition called long QT syndrome. Dustin Nash, MD, electrophysiologist, was helpful in guiding this Montana family through their five-month treatment plan with the Colorado Fetal Care Center and Heart Institute, which included birth and surgery.
