What is a cavernous malformation?

A cavernous malformation is a group of abnormal blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord. These blood vessels have thin, fragile walls and are clustered together like a small bunch of grapes. Their walls are weaker than normal blood vessel walls, so they can sometimes leak or bleed (hemorrhage).

A cavernous malformation may also be called a:

  • Cavernoma
  • Cavernous angioma
  • Cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM)

What causes a cavernous malformation?

There are two types of cavernous malformations:

  • Sporadic (80% of cases): Most children have a single cavernous malformation that happens by chance, with no family history of the condition.
  • Familial (20% of cases): In some cases, a genetic change (mutation) in one of three genes — CCM1 (KRIT1), CCM2 or CCM3 (PDCD10) — causes multiple cavernous malformations. A parent with a cavernous malformation has a 50% chance of passing the gene change on to each of their children.

Cavernous malformations are rare. They occur in only about 0.5% of the general population.
