Distal Intestinal Obstruction Syndrome (DIOS)

DIOS is a complication of cystic fibrosis in which the stool in the ileum becomes dehydrated and thick enough to obstruct the intestine. Patients often present with significant abdominal pain, distension, vomiting. The symptoms of DIOS may overlap with other abdominal conditions.

The objectives of the pathway include:

  • Outline initial diagnostic approach to patients with cystic fibrosis with suspected DIOS
  • Outline best available evidence-based management of DIOS
  • Provide recommendations for disposition and appropriate consultations for patients with DIOS
