Translational Research: What It Is and How It Works
From scientific discovery to real-world impact
At its simplest, translational research is the process of turning scientific discoveries into interventions that translate to meaningful health outcomes. Each phase from basic scientific discovery (T0) through application in human trials (T1) to integration into clinical practice (T2 and T3) and assessment of public health impact (T4) ensures the research has a true benefit to society. With three disease pathways — common, rare and mystery/undiagnosed — Children’s Hospital Colorado has the expertise and infrastructure to conduct research in all areas of translation.
T0
Basic scientific discovery
Translation to natural animal models
This research stage includes lab testing in live animals or non-animal model systems that either naturally mimic or are engineered to mimic the disease. Studies capture important data about safety and feasibility for treatment in humans.
T1
Translation to humans
Proof of concept and phase 1 clinical trials
This research phase includes small clinical trials in people for the first time to explore potential benefits, test treatment safety and gather insights around dosage and timing.
T2
Translation to patients
Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials
Larger studies confirm treatment success across patients and support its approval for routine application. Findings are then translated into guidelines used by doctors for patient care.

Translation to practice
Phase 4 clinical trials
Proven treatments are adopted into everyday clinical care. Researchers also look at how a new treatment affects health outcomes in real-life settings across larger population groups.

Community-level outcomes
Clinical treatments are expanded to reach national or global populations through policy and public health programs. What once started as a lab-based discovery now saves lives and benefits communities around the world.
