Research and Innovation Scholar Award (RISA) (faculty only)
Due Date: March 1
Apply now
The purpose of the Research Scholar & Innovation Award (RISA) is to support the career development of early-stage child health investigators in their first faculty position who plan to submit external grant applications to continue their research program. The total award is up to $100,000 (direct costs only) per year for up to 2 years. Second-year funding is considered upon submission of a progress report before the end of first-year funding, demonstrating adequate progress. The award requires a letter from the applicant’s division/section chief or department chair guaranteeing that the specified percentage of time is protected for research activities (requires 75% FTE or 50% FTE for surgeons and interventionalists, per NHLBI requirements) and a commitment for $25,000 of matching funds for research expenses.
An MD/DO, PhD or MD/PhD investigator who is a full-time CU Anschutz faculty member with primary appointment in 1) the Department of Pediatrics or 2) a child health related department or division, such as pediatric surgery, pediatric radiology or child psychiatry is eligible to apply.
- The RISA is intended for early-stage faculty investigators (instructor/senior instructor or assistant professor) within the first five years of their initial faculty appointment.
- The faculty member’s research must be devoted to child health research, either basic, clinical, translational or health outcomes/health services. Proposals must clearly outline the applicant’s plan to apply for external funding to continue their research.
- The applicant must identify a mentor who is committed to working with the investigator throughout the course of their project (Letter of Support required).
- The applicant’s department or division/section must commit to provide an additional $25,000 per year for research expenses (Letter of Support required).
- The total RISA award is limited to $100,000 direct costs per year for up to two years of funding. No indirect costs are allowed.
- The RISA award is intended to be used to cover the proportion of the PI's salary/benefits needed to complete the proposed research (usually greater than 75% time or 50% time for surgeons or interventionalists per NHLBI requirements). However, if salary support is already covered for protected time by other funds, then using the RISA funds to support other aspects of the research will be considered on a case-by-case basis, after the award is issued.
- An applicant is not eligible for the RISA if they have received a start-up research package exceeding $500,000 from Children’s Hospital Colorado/University of Colorado or currently have ≥50% FTE of their salary funded from research-based sources (for example, an NIH K-award).
- Funding cannot be used for tuition for postgraduate academic degrees or related programs.
- If a Research and Innovation Scholar Awardee has, or later obtains, additional research funding that includes salary support, then the RISA award may be prorated or terminated when the other funding begins.
- The deadline for applications will be March 1 annually. Funding will begin on July 1.
- A revised and resubmitted application must include a one-page “Introduction to the Application” addressing the criticisms of the previous review.
- Applications will be scored using NIH criteria for career development awards.
- A progress report will be required before the end of first year of funding, demonstrating adequate progress before second-year funding will be considered.
