Prevention and Diagnosis/Treatment of Venous Thromboembolism and Pulmonary Embolism Clinical Pathways

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) is increasing among pediatric patients with the greatest risk factors being as central venous catheters, surgery, trauma, malignancy, and other chronic medical conditions. This clinical guideline provides evidence-based recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of pediatric VTE and PE in the hospital setting with its aim to support consistent clinical practice, promote timely risk assessment and treatment, and optimize the safety and quality of care for children at risk of or diagnosed with thromboembolic disease.

About our Prevention and Diagnosis/Treatment of Venous Thromboembolism and Pulmonary Embolism clinical pathways

This VTE prevention pathway has been created and revised by a team of hematologists, intensivists, pharmacists and multiple other subspecialties to meet the growing literature on VTE prevention in pediatric patients with central venous lines being the most significant risk factor in the development of hospital acquired VTE. Created by the cardiac interventionalist/cath team, the interventional radiology team and hematologists and intensivists from both the PICU and CICU, the VTE/PE diagnosis and management pathway emphasizes efficient diagnostic processes and timely decisions for medical management alone vs the addition of thrombolysis or mechanical thrombobectomy in order to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.
