EMS Outreach and Education

Ambulance, jet plane, and helicopter EMS vehicles for Children's Hospital Colorado.

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Outreach and Education team at Children’s Hospital Colorado is a national leader in providing training and support to EMS and flight teams throughout our seven-state region.

We train side by side with more than 5,000 healthcare professionals across every discipline each year. Our team customizes their offerings to the needs of the caregivers, from in-person lectures to simulations to virtual training.

When a child experiences a medical emergency, pediatric expertise is critical, both in the hospital and on the way there. Children’s Colorado is proud to provide emergency medical transport services for infants, kids and teens through the Children’s One Critical Care Flight Team.

Our mission is to support clinical caregivers by providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based pediatric emergency medical services training and resources possible.

If you have questions, need a customized EMS training for your staff or would like to ask about any of our below offerings, please email us at EMSOutreach@childrenscolorado.org. Many of our EMS trainings are free and online.

Education opportunities

Our team has developed several ways to help provide the most recent evidence-based pediatric education available. In keeping with our mission to support and educate those in the community, we consistently offer online continuing education opportunities via the Children's Colorado continuing education website, as well as:

  • Pediatric Emergency Education Lecture Series (PEELS): Taking place on the second Friday of every month from 9 to 10 a.m. MST, PEELS is a one hour continuing education class dedicated to the prehospital care of kids and includes time for Q&A with our faculty. Email us to join our email list and receive the topics and registration link the Monday before the training.
  • Abuse recognition module: Our emergency department faculty worked closely with child protection specialists to develop a learning module about identifying child abuse. This case-based, dynamic online training takes you through cases with images, scenarios and key learning points. CE credit is provided.

Children’s Colorado is recognized by the State of Colorado as an EMS Training Group (CO-049), and we can provide EMS continuing education credit. Through our standing as an academic teaching institution, we can provide CME, CNE and EMS CE for most of our trainings. We are happy to work through obtaining continuing education credits together to ensure the needs of your team are met.

Custom training and simulation

Our team provides customized pediatric emergency care training based on your agency or department needs. Whether it’s a 30-minute virtual chat, a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) course, a rotating half-day simulation, or a two-day conference, we will work with you to create exactly what your team requires.

Protocol development and support

We routinely work with EMS agencies, flight teams and regional hospital systems to help develop and update pediatric protocols with a strong evidence base. We will share our experience and expertise so that your group doesn’t have to begin from scratch.

EMS student and active provider clinical rotations

As the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the region, our pediatric emergency departments and intensive care units host more than 700 EMS students and professionals annually. These clinical rotations help lay a strong foundation in pediatric knowledge for EMS students and complement existing experience for the working EMS professional.

Patient follow-up

Our team routinely provides timely, supportive and HIPAA-compliant patient follow-up. If you and your agency have transported or transferred a patient to a Children’s Colorado facility and you’d like to know how that patient is doing, please reach out to us via email. Many times, these post-transport conversations help to improve patient care.

EMS for Children’s Colorado (EMSC)

Children’s Colorado works with EMS for Children Colorado (EMSC) to promote and support our EMS and emergency department partners’ ability to care for sick and injured children. EMSC also works closely with the Regional Emergency Medical and Trauma Services Advisory Councils (RETAC), Emergency Medical Services Association of Colorado (EMSAC) and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to advocate, educate and train providers.

EMSC and the Children’s Colorado EMS team partner to educate emergency medical services and emergency departments across the state of Colorado. In addition, EMSC developed a statewide pediatric readiness recognition program for emergency departments known as Colorado Pediatric Preparedness for the Emergency Room (COPPER).

For prehospital care, EMSC is building the Colorado Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (COPECC) program, which will provide resources and foster a peer network for those serving as pediatric emergency care coordinators at EMS agencies. For more information, visit the EMSC website or email us with questions or requests.

Colorado Pediatric Emergency and Trauma Conference

Children's Colorado is proud to host the Colorado Pediatric Emergency and Trauma Conference, dedicated to advancing pediatric emergency care and trauma management. This annual conference brings together healthcare professionals from across Colorado and beyond to share knowledge, best practices and innovations in pediatric emergency medicine every fall. Conference information and registration are updated yearly on the continuing education website.
