Children's Hospital Colorado

Financial Assistance

We know that paying for healthcare can be stressful. That’s why Children’s Hospital Colorado offers multiple ways to get help paying for care, and our Financial Counseling team will help you apply. We can help with:

  • Government assistance
  • Hospital financial assistance
  • Payment plans

Anyone can apply for financial assistance. If you don’t have insurance, our Financial Counseling team will automatically reach out to talk with you about available options and see what you might qualify for. Learn more about the programs available, eligibility requirements and how to apply below.

Government assistance

Children's Colorado works with eligible patients and families to apply for government aid to cover hospital services. That means we provide temporary Medicaid coverage for up to 45 days to pregnant patients and children under age 19 while we process your medical assistance application.

You may qualify for one of the government assistance programs listed below based on your family’s income. Eligibility for government assistance is based on how much your family earns compared to the Federal Poverty Guidelines (FPG). The FPG can change from year to year. Our Financial Counseling team will help you throughout this process.

Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid)

Colorado’s Medicaid program is called Health First Colorado. Health First Colorado is a public health insurance program run by the state.

Who is eligible for Health First Colorado?

  • Children, pregnant people and adults who make less than a certain amount of money per month. (See the chart below.)
  • Must be a Colorado resident
  • Adults 18 and older who are not pregnant must meet citizenship or immigration requirements (this does not apply to pregnant people or children under the age of 18)

Child Health Plan Plus

Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) is a public low-cost health insurance program. Run by the State of Colorado, this option is for pregnant women and children whose families earn too much to qualify for Medicaid (see above: Health First Colorado), but not enough to pay for private health insurance. You can apply for CHP+ at any time.

Who is eligible for CHP+?

  • Children ages 18 and under
  • Pregnant women ages 19 and over
  • Applicants with household income under 260% of the federal poverty guidelines (FPG); see the income guidelines below
  • Must be a Colorado resident
  • Applicants who are not eligible for Medicaid
  • Applicants who do not have other health insurance

Hospital financial assistance

When a patient and their family are not eligible for government assistance, the Financial Counseling team at Children’s Colorado may be able to offer other financial aid through discounts and payment plans.

Children’s Colorado Hospital Discounted Care (charity care)

The Hospital Discounted Care Program, sometimes referred to as charity care, provides financial aid to patients and families in need. Families who receive hospital discounted care will be required to make a copayment based on their income level according to federal poverty guidelines.

Who is eligible for the Hospital Discounted Care Program?

  • Patients residing in Colorado
  • Patients who meet income guidelines
  • Patients who are not eligible for Health First Colorado or CHP+

Amounts generally billed (AGB)

Children's Colorado limits the amount charged for care we provide to any individual who is eligible for financial assistance. We use the look-back method to determine the AGB.
