Admission to the Medical Day Treatment Program
A school tailor-made for students who need to be close to care so families don’t have to choose between education and health. Here, they go hand-in-hand.
The Medical Day Treatment Program is a hospital-based school program for students in Colorado with medical needs. A medical professional must refer students to the program. Once we get a referral, enrollment is based on availability. Students can attend year-round or just for the school year or summer, for as long as their care team deems necessary. Our goal is always to help students return to their home school.
Who is medical day treatment for?
The program welcomes referred students, ages 6 to18 who are experiencing a long-lasting medical issue that impacts their ability to attend traditional school. Common diagnoses in our student body include, but are not limited to:
- Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
- Severe asthma or breathing conditions
- Neurological disorders, including seizures
- Heart conditions
- Solid organ transplants
- Autoimmune diseases
- Cancer and blood diseases
- Sickle cell anemia
- Chronic pain
- Kidney disease
- Gastrointestinal problems
We have two classrooms on Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora — one for younger students and one for older students.
Being admitted to the Medical Day Treatment Program
Below are the steps to enrolling in our Medical Day Treatment Program:
- Children and family take part in a pre-placement meeting with the medical day treatment team.
- Admission to the Medical Day Treatment Program must be supported by a medical provider.
- The child’s home school district approves the placement.
- The parent or guardian agrees to take part in the program.
